Rather than using traditional metal amalgam (silver-colored fillings), we fill cavities with composite fillings made from a plastic and glass mixture. The composite matches the color of your tooth or teeth, leaving the filling nearly invisible.
Not only are composite fillings attractive, they also help to strengthen the tooth. Once we remove tooth decay, clean and prime the area, the composite bonds to the remaining structure to help prevent breakage. This is especially valuable in the case of larger cavities. The composite also helps reduce tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. We often remove less tooth structure to accommodate the composite. This ensures we retain more of the overall strength of the tooth with composite compared to silver fillings.
