Importance of dental hygiene

Dental Hygiene refers to the practice of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Good dental hygiene is an essential part of maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile. It involves regular brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist for professional cleaning.

When it comes to dental hygiene, we all have a tendency to become negligent, especially when it comes to oral health. Commonly, people skip brushing and flossing, do not go for regular dental checkups, etc. Such negligence can lead to severe gum diseases and other oral conditions that may require expensive treatment.

What are the benefits of good dental hygiene?

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is a must. It helps remove plaque and tartar deposits from the surface of the teeth and underneath the gum line. Regular brushing also prevents the growth of microbes in the mouth and keeps them from causing infections.

Regular flossing is also very important. If you do not floss properly, you might leave a lot of debris behind in between your teeth after brushing. This can lead to bad breath, cavities, tooth decay, gum diseases, etc. Hence, flossing is an essential part of your daily oral routine.

Regular dental checkups are also necessary. When you visit us for a routine checkup, we will screen the mouth for signs of gum diseases or other oral conditions. We will also suggest ways to improve your oral health if necessary.

How does it help prevent dental issues?

Brushing and flossing your teeth every day is critical for preventing cavities. It’s also important for protecting your gums. Professional cleanings help remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis, an infection of the gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to bone and tooth loss.

How can you practice good dental hygiene?

Dental hygiene practices can be very simple but are equally effective. All you need to do is follow these steps:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day using an ADA-approved soft-bristle toothbrush and an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. Make sure you brush the inner surface of your teeth as well as the outer surfaces of the teeth well. You may also consider using a tongue scraper as it helps remove debris from the surface of your tongue as well.
  • Floss regularly using fluoride floss at least once every day. Cut off about 18 inches of floss and wind it into a tight coil between your thumb and index finger. Use the coil to clean between your teeth and below the gum line.
  • Rinse your mouth with an ADA-approved mouthwash to get rid of any leftover microbes in your mouth after brushing and flossing. Using mouthwash regularly also helps prevent bad breath and cavities caused by harmful bacteria in your mouth.
  • Seeing your dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup isn’t scary. In fact, it’s one of the best ways to detect problems early on, prevent new issues, and maintain your smile’s overall health. During these appointments, your dentist will clean your teeth and inspect them for signs of decay, disease, or infection. Maintenance like cleanings, x-rays, sealants, and more are also performed to keep your smile in tip-top shape.

Preventive dental care.

Practicing good oral hygiene at home can help prevent cavities and gum disease. Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day helps to remove food particles and plaque from the teeth and gum line. Visiting the dentist for routine checkups and professional cleanings can help keep the teeth free from plaque buildup.
